Advanced Digital Illustration:
Assignment #8: Finished Advertisement, in context
Finish your advertisement, and display it in two formats:
1) Digital file of the finished illustration (.pdf, .jpg, .png).
2) Show your illustration in the context of an advertisement. You can choose any context that advertisements are found. Will it be on a billboard? A bus? A sign? A flyer? A magazine page? A t-shirt? Find a photo of another advertisement in that context, and paste your image into it. Manipulate the illustration so that it fits with the angle and shape of the advertisement: it should look realistic, as though your ad is really in that context.
GRADING:

__ (2) Concept: advertisement is interesting and provocative
__ (2) Image sends a positive message about the product.

Assignment #6: Advertising Analysis, Product Research & Concept
Part 1: Advertising Analysis
Find 3 Advertisements or Ad Campaigns that catch your attention.
Bring a copy of each to class to present next week.
Analyze each one: answer the following:
1) What initially attracted your attention?
2) Where did you see the Advertisement? What format? (Billboard, Magazine, Newspaper, Banner Ad, Flyer, Public Transit, etc…)
3) What do you like about this advertisement?
4) How is the product represented graphically? (Photo, Digital Illustration, Drawing, Painting, Combination?)
5) How is the product represented conceptually? What is “happening” in the Ad, and how is the product involved?
6) What type of message is being sent about the product?
7) What Advertising Concepts are being used in this Ad?
Part 2: Product Research & Concept
Decide on a Product to use for your Advertisement, and think of 3 concepts that would catch the viewer’s attention and highlight the product.
1) What is the product?
2) How is the product advertised currently? (if it is an existing product) What advertising concepts are being used here? (see class handout) Do you consider the Ad campaign to be successful?
3) Sketch 3 concepts for your advertisement. Use a different Advertising Concept in each sketch. Be prepared to explain how this concept will attract the viewer’s attention, and what message it will send about the product.
GRADING:
Part 1: Advertising Analysis

Research, Analysis, Proposal & Sketches
Due Week 2: 10 points total
In the next few weeks, your assignment is to create a series of 3 Article Illustrations based on actual article content found in magazines or newspapers.
This week, start by researching articles within a subject of your choice, and create a proposal and sketches for your project.
Part 1: Research & Analysis:
A) Find 3 illustrated articles on different topics within the same subject.
Any subject can work for this project: politics, fashion, technology, environmentalism, science, world issues, entertainment, etc…!
Bring the 3 articles to class next week.
(bring the actual article, a scan or high-quality photo)
B) Analyze each article’s illustration, answering the following questions.
Write 1-2 sentences for each question, using correct spelling and grammar.
1) What is the article about?
2) What is pictured in the illustration? How do the subjects represented in the illustration relate back to the article?
3) Describe the style of the illustration: What age group, gender, or culture would respond to this style? Is that appropriate to the content of the article?
4) Historical Reference: Is the style of the illustration Contemporary or Retro? What time period is referenced in the illustration? How is this achieved? What color combinations and shapes reference that time period?
5) Overall: Do you consider this illustration to be successful? Explain why or why not: Does it draw your attention? Do you feel that it correctly represents the content of the article? Do you feel that it would appeal to the article’s target audience? How?
Part 2: Proposal & Sketches:
Propose a subject to explore for your project. It can be the same subject that you researched, or you can choose a new subject.

3) Find an article to use for your first illustration. Bring it to class week 2.
4) Create 3 Sketches of possible ideas for the first illustration. Think of 3 different concepts for the first illustration: each sketch should include different objects and have a unique composition. Sketches can be digital or on paper. All 3 sketches should relate back to the same article.
